Josee Bergeron is a Canadian Métis, mother of five, freelance writer, and owner of Backwoods Mama (since 2009) with an educational background in nursing (BScN) and writing (SFU Creative Writing Certificate – currently enrolled). In her upcoming book, Beyond the Front Door, she tells the story of how she, an
advocate of raising outdoor children, became trapped indoors by intensive parenting culture, the fall-out that occurred, and her journey back home to nature. Through engaging and relatable storytelling, relevant research, and simple activities, she invites parents to journey alongside her to experience how nature and aconnection to nature – getting beyond the front door – can lead to happier and healthier families. Her first book, Beyond the Front Door: Embracing Nature for a Happier and Healthier Family, was released by Bloomsbury Academic in February 2026.
Bergeron’s work has been referenced in several parenting books such as Oh Crap, I Have a Toddler by Jamie Glowacki and The Call of the Wild and Free by Ainsley Arment as well as included in digital modules for teacher training programs such STEM Learning on Playscapes prepared at the University of Cincinnati.
