RED SEAL, Rosa Kwon Easton

A Korean mother and son navigate wars, displacement, and identity across decades and borders in a moving multigenerational saga by the author of White Mulberry.

In 1943 Japan, the Pacific War rages on. Miyoung, a Korean-born single mother and nurse, defies an order to serve in the Imperial Japanese Army and instead flees with her six-year-old son, Ko-chan, who is leaving everything familiar behind, including the grandparents he loves. Miyoung hopes Ko-chan will finally claim his heritage and that she can reclaim her own as well.

Miyoung promises her anxious son an adventure. Their life-changing trek to Miyoung’s homeland takes them first to Japan-occupied Manchuria, where Miyoung’s brother offers shelter and Ko-chan, coming of age, begins to question where his future lies. When Japan’s defeat in World War II forces them to escape again, it triggers a decades-long odyssey of survival, sacrifice, and—for the generations to follow—a search for identity across three nations.

A powerful tribute to the endurance of family bonds, Red Seal (Lake Union, October 2026) explores the struggle to define oneself when torn between multiple worlds and by cultural upheaval, and the resilience it takes to find a place to call home.

Praise for Red Seal

“Like the previous tale, this continuation of Miyoung’s story features themes of culture and identity, immigration, and determining one’s own destiny.” —Booklist

It is a heartfelt tribute to the endurance of family bonds and the hardiness it takes to find a new place to call home.” —Mark Sullivan, bestselling author of Beneath a Scarlet Sky and All the Glimmering Stars

“A gorgeous and moving historical narrative that is epic and intimate at the same time. At the heart of this riveting story is a mother’s love for her son as they navigate their way through the tumultuous history of Korea in modern times. A revelatory novel of history, family, and love.” —Minsoo Kang, author of The Melancholy of Untold History

“Rosa Kwon Easton masterfully sweeps the reader along on a journey through countries and decades as mother and son each search for their true identities. Red Seal will touch you with the struggles they face and provide a valuable glimpse into the Asian countries torn apart by war.” —Lyn Liao Butler, bestselling author of The Fourth Daughter

“I could not put this book down. Engrossing, suspenseful, and searing, Red Seal is a tale of reclamation and resilience in a turbulent time in Korean and Japanese history. In direct and powerful language, Rosa Kwon Easton has crafted an epic story of the lengths a mother will go to ensure the survival of her children as well as the identities we claim—privately and publicly—through sustained losses. You will be swept up by the twists of history and human fate and stay for Miyoung and Soonho—a story of how we become the people we always hoped.” —Hyeseung Song, author of Docile: Memoirs of a Not-So-Perfect Asian Girl

Emily Harding is the author of How Freakin’ Romantic and co-author of the For the Love of Austen series. Thank You for Remembering was released by Gallery Books in September 2026.

Growing up, Marnie Stephens believed that destiny was real and the universe had a plan. But at thirty, real life has become more difficult than divine. Especially when Marnie wakes up at a hospital in Boston with no memory of how she got there…or the last year of her life.

Her doctor tells her she suffered a head injury, her boyfriend, Matt, insists they broke up months ago, and her hair is somehow eight inches shorter. Before she knows it, she finds herself in an apartment she doesn’t remember with a new neighbor, Ben Morgan, she’s sure she won’t forget.

As Marnie sets out to retrace the last year of her life, the last thing she needs is to start falling for Ben, the grumpy—and incredibly attractive—neighbor helping her. But the universe has other plans, and it’s not long before Marnie begins to wonder if fighting for the past is as important as the one person who could be her future.

ARISTOTLE: The First Teacher, Philip Freeman

The first modern biography of Aristotle―student of Plato, tutor to Alexander, and architect of ideas still studied around the world, from the author of ALEXANDER THE GREAT and JULIUS CAESAR.

Aristotle stands among the most brilliant and influential figures in history, the inventor of almost every subject studied in universities today, from biology to political science to literary criticism to logic. Yet until now his life has remained a mystery. Aristotle: The First Teacher was published by Yale University Press as part of their “Ancient Lives” series in September 2026.

In this book, Philip Freeman brings Aristotle (384–322 BCE) vividly to life, from his orphan childhood to his years as Plato’s student in Athens and his role as tutor to Alexander the Great in Macedonia. Drawing on ancient sources and modern scholarship, Freeman traces Aristotle’s journey through a world of political upheaval and intellectual revolution, revealing Aristotle not only as a philosopher but as a scientist, literary critic, and seeker of happiness―a man who dissected sea creatures, mapped the stars, and invented logic to make sense of life’s complexities.

Aristotle’s ideas still shape how we think about truth, virtue, and the good life. This is the definitive portrait of one of history’s greatest minds―the thinker Dante called “the master of those who know.”

“Few people have exerted a greater influence than Aristotle. Yet his life is shrouded in mystery and legend. With this concise and elegant construction, Philip Freeman has performed a tremendous service while also shedding light on this pivotal period of Ancient Greek and European history.”―Neel Burton, author of The Gang of Three: Socrates, Plato, Aristotle

“This book brings one of antiquity’s most formidable minds to life with clarity and verve, tracing his journey from the Macedonian court to Plato’s Academy and beyond. A fine introduction for any reader curious to know about this extraordinary philosopher.”―Armand D’Angour, author of Socrates in Love

Philip Freeman has been the Fletcher Jones Chair of Western Culture and professor of the humanities at Pepperdine University.  His books include Julian: Rome’s Last Emperor, Hannibal: Rome’s Greatest Enemy, Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar.

VONNEGUT’S WAR: The Making of Slaughterhouse-Five, Susan Farrell

Banned, burned, and censored, Kurt Vonnegut’s 1969 novel Slaughterhouse-Five is widely regarded as one of the greatest (and most controversial) novels of the twentieth century. Fusing vivid biography with popular history and close textual analysis, Vonnegut’s War: The Making of Slaughterhouse-Five (Bloomsbury Academic, August 2026) tells the fascinating story of the making of a modern classic and the writer that created it.
New archival discoveries and recently released oral histories give us the fullest account yet published of Vonnegut’s real-life prisoner-of-war experiences at Stalag IV-B and Dresden, which heavily influenced Slaughterhouse-Five. A recently discovered trove of letters introduces us to his first wife, Jane Cox Vonnegut, and her influence on his writing. Along the way, we also encounter UFOs and aliens, grapple with the shadow cast by the Vietnam war, and unearth the stranger-than-fiction tale of David Irving’s The Destruction of Dresden, the historical reference behind Vonnegut’s writing about the Dresden firebombing.  This book sheds light on one of America’s most beloved writers and explores how cultural forces helped to shape a modern masterpiece of storytelling.

Reviews

“An arresting account of the creation and impact of Kurt Vonnegut’s 1969 novel . . . Through Farrell’s detailed storytelling, including gutting scenes of Vonnegut’s wartime imprisonment, Slaughterhouse-Five emerges as an alchemical mixture of its author’s biography, the realities of war, and the 1960s cultural zeitgeist. This is a tour de force of literary detective work.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review

“In Vonnegut’s War, Professor Susan Farrell neatly pieces together how Vonnegut created a modern classic whose anti-war message remains as relevant as ever.” ―The Independent

“Vonnegut’s War draws on oral histories and new archival discoveries, shedding light on how cultural forces shaped the classic 1969 time travel novel.” ―SFX

“When Kurt Vonnegut was my teacher, and the first reader of my first novel, he was writing Slaughterhouse-Five. Susan Farrell perceptively illuminates Kurt’s arduous rewriting of his POW experience as fiction; she also brings to light the enduring effect of this courageous novel on Vonnegut’s literary reputation and the rest of his life. First my mentor, later my dear friend, Kurt’s life and fiction were forever affected by the Allied bombing of Dresden, which Susan Farrell has admirably and comprehensively depicted.” ―John Irving

“Susan Farrell writes with warmth and style. Her penetrating study of Kurt Vonnegut’s life and work uncovers facets that freshly illuminate a much-read novel we thought we knew. With one keen insight after another, Farrell shows why Slaughterhouse-Five was a novel for its time, how it made its tumultuous, icon-smashing and self-questioning time, and why it remains a novel for our time.” ―Ken Kalfus

“Farrell writes the defining historiography of SL5, answering the question,“How the hell did Vonnegut do that?” by sequencing its well archived drafts before contextualizing his narrative choices. And that’s just the half of it. Farrell addresses SL5’s principle defining discussions including its metafictional elements, the questioned morality of Dresden’s bombing, its adoption as a valued tome among Vietnam protestors, Vonnegut’s science fiction albatross, and the novel’s importance in court history as a frequent target for censorship.” ―Marc Leeds, Author of The Vonnegut Encyclopedia,

“This book is superb. It’s a unique, fresh, deep dive into how Slaughterhouse Five, Kurt Vonnegut’s seminal work, came about. It’s also a damn good read: Concise, substantial, entertaining, surprising.” ―Suzanne McConnell, author of ‘Pity the Reader: On Writing with Style’ by Kurt Vonnegut and Suzanne McConnell

About the Author

Susan Farrell is a Professor of American Literature at the College of Charleston, USA. Susan has published two previous books on Vonnegut, founded the International Kurt Vonnegut Society in 2008 and has served as an officer in the organization ever since.

A CRUISE TO NOWHERE: My Search for Amy Lynn Bradley, James Renner

Gripping, suspenseful, and layered with insight, this is the first full account of the infamous disappearance of Amy Lynn Bradley while onboard a cruise ship in the Caribbean—from the acclaimed author of True Crime Addict.
In March 1998, the Bradley family—Ron, Iva, and their children, Amy and Brad—boarded the Rhapsody of the Seas for a week-long Caribbean cruise. The trip was a chance to celebrate Ron’s success at work and Amy’s college graduation.
In the early hours of March 24, Amy Bradley—a pretty, athletic 23-year-old—returned to the family’s stateroom with Brad after dancing at the ship’s nightclub. Amy grabbed a blanket and went out to sleep on the balcony. A few hours later, her father awoke to find her gone. What happened to her remains a mystery.
Did Amy fall or jump into the water? Did she leave the boat voluntarily when it docked at Curaçao that morning? Was she smuggled off against her will and trafficked in one of the island’s brothels? In a baffling case filled with false leads, rumors, and conflicting witness reports, the only certainty is that, nearly three decades later, the Bradleys are still looking for Amy.
Now, acclaimed investigative journalist James Renner provides the first definitive account of Amy’s disappearance, enriched with his own personal narrative that explores themes of identity, loss, and the deeply human need to find meaning in tragedy.
With empathy and a keen eye, Renner interviews witnesses who speak on record for the first time, offering fascinating new theories, and explores a little-known side of Amy’s life that may explain everything about her fate.

A Cruise to Nowhere: My Search for Amy Lynn Bradley was released by Kensington in July 2026.

SALT SISTERS, Lindsey J. Palmer

Against the stunning backdrop of Cape Cod, two sisters reunite and confront their painful past in a powerful novel about family expectations and life’s unforeseen turns.

Twin sisters Jocelyn and Maddy Marx grew up in a tight-knit family on Cape Cod, but they couldn’t be more different. Jocelyn, laid-back and dreamy, still lives in their hometown as a Realtor. Maddy, intense and ambitious, left for New York after college and never looked back. Until the summer they turn thirty-one.

After a dramatic fall from grace in her career, a pregnant Maddy returns to the Cape with her husband and announces she’s back for good. For Jocelyn, it’s less a reconciliation than a reminder of a life that was ripped away from her and the deep grief she’s carried ever since. Back in each other’s orbit, the sisters reopen old wounds and are forced to confront what it will take to heal.

Salt Sisters (Lake Union, July 2026) is a moving exploration of sisterhood and motherhood, and the courage it takes to face the past, forgive, and finally let go.

4 JANES: A Novel, Marian Yee

Debut author Marian Yee asks:  What if Jane Eyre didn’t marry Mr. Rochester after all?

Marian Yee’s brilliant debut novel, 4 Janes (Little A, June 2026)  explores alternative narratives for Jane Eyre, in different times and physical worlds.

Through time, space, and the transcendence of maternal love, Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre is reimagined in the parallel lives of one soul searching for meaning, connection, and a place to belong.

Jane Eyre is a missionary’s wife.

A bookseller in Vietnam.

A time traveler.

A hero in a modern gothic tale.

What if Jane’s story didn’t end with her marriage to Edward Rochester? What if she never married him at all?

In one lifetime, Jane travels to India and Burma as Mrs. St. John Rivers. In another, she’s Trang, a young woman selling books in Vietnam, vying for the love of the local priest. Yet another picks up where Brontë left her, now grieving the loss of her child and crossing time and space to find him. And finally, a young Vietnamese-American man searching for himself in Boston, a tutor whose relationship with a veteran feels strangely, achingly familiar…

Each thread tells Jane’s story in sweeping, heartbreaking shades of loss, vulnerability, yearning, and the fierce love of mother and child that withstands time and space. While she may long for something more out of a life she didn’t get to choose, she can still decide what to make of it.

4 JANES is available in hardcover, paperback, ebook and audio.

Review

“4 Janes is an inventive and heartbreaking epic that reimagines the iconic character of Jane Eyre, exploring how one enduring figure transcends space and time. Spanning continents and eras, Marian Yee reveals how belief, love, and resilience echo through the ages. A tribute to the transformative power of reading.”―Michelle Min Sterling, New York Times bestselling author of Camp Zero

“Four very different Jane Eyres lead parallel lives in Marian Yee’s 4 Janes, an ideal read for the Brontë fan longing for more. Exquisitely written and populated with captivating and surprising characters―from the madwoman in the attic to Ho Chi Minh―this genre-bending novel illuminates the tender soul at the heart of one of literature’s most beloved classics. Vivid, modern, and inventive.”―Caroline Woods, author of The Mesmerist, The Lunar Housewife, and Fräulein M.

“In illuminating prose, Marian Yee beautifully reimagines Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre for the modern reader. 4 Janes weaves the lives of four seemingly disparate Janes―from a missionary’s wife in Calcutta to a bookseller in Vietnam―and brings them masterfully together over centuries and continents to answer the timeless question: What does it mean to love, and how do we know when we’ve found it? These Janes look and feel different from the Victorian Jane we know, but their passionate spirit and universal longings capture our hearts all the same.”―Rosa Kwon Easton, Amazon bestselling author of White Mulberry

“In 4 Janes, Marian Yee accomplishes an astonishing feat of literary acrobatics with consummate skill and enormous entertainment value. Like a master juggler, she dazzles by keeping multiple plotlines and points of view, a large cast of characters, and different time periods flashing before our eyes without a single pause or fumble. I can only marvel at her near-miraculous dexterity, especially in her reimagining of an iconic novel and its beloved heroine for the twenty-first century. Readers of the nineteenth-century novel will treasure this book, but so will anyone who cares about the possibility of extending the genre into our own fractured, intersecting times and places. 4 Janes is a tour de force of storytelling creativity, a richly imagined fantasy, and a wonderful read.”―Mark Sullivan, author of Slag, Best American Essays prizewinner

“An engrossing multidimensional plot with deep insights into human nature along the way…A treat of a read!”―Andrea Nye, author of Socrates and Diotima

LIGAMENTS: Holding Us Together, Roy A. Meals MD

A lively tour through the biology, health, human performance, and popular culture of our bodies’ essential connective tissue.

Ligaments are the quiet workhorses of the human body. They anchor our bones, guide our movements, and protect our joints―yet they remain largely unseen and misunderstood. In Ligaments: Appreciating the Bands that Bind Us, orthopedic surgeon and acclaimed science writer Roy A. Meals explores anatomy, biology, history, health, human performance, and popular culture to unlock the mysteries of ligaments. Completing a trilogy that began with Bones: Inside and Out and Muscle: The Gripping Story of Strength and Movement, this richly illustrated volume–Ligaments: Holding Us Together (Johns Hopkins University Press, May 2026) offers a wide-ranging exploration of the anatomy, history, injuries, and cultural relevance of ligaments.

These bone-to-bone connectors are the critical linking mechanisms that allow our muscles to produce purposeful movement. Dr. Meals explains how ligaments stabilize the skeleton like hinge pins on a door, resist the forces of gravity in the face and breasts, and contribute to feats of athleticism, contortion, and childbirth. Readers will learn how ligaments are stronger than steel, how they recover from injury (or fail to), and how they can be stretched, stiffened, or surgically replaced. He also clarifies the differences among ligaments, tendons, and fascia, and why some people are “double-jointed” and others are not. Covering current and emerging treatments for ligament injuries, including artificial and engineered ligaments, the book provides practical insights into maintaining joint stability and flexibility across the lifetime.

Whether examining career-ending sports injuries, congenital laxity, or the elasticity of the vocal cords, Dr. Meals builds a case for why ligaments deserve center stage in our understanding of movement and health.

Ligaments is a whimsical journey through the history of anatomical discovery. As only Dr. Roy Meals can do, he takes what might appear to be a tedious read and makes it entertaining and broadly accessible.
―Stacy Hite, University of Virginia Clinical Practice GroupYou do not need to have majored in biology or be an orthopaedic surgeon to enjoy this book. Dr. Meals takes complex subjects like the importance of different ligaments in the body, and how they generally respond to injury, and explains them in ways that all can understand. Ligaments: Appreciating the Bands That Bind Us is a must-read for those that want to better understand their body and how it functions.
